Base Incense Ingredients & Their Origins

Our Incense Base

Every stick begins with a plant-based base designed for a steady burn and a balanced scent. We focus on natural materials that work well together, burn cleanly, and support the oils layered on top. Not every ingredient appears in every blend, but each plays a role in how our incense performs.

Water

Spring water is used to bind the dry materials into a workable paste. It helps create a smooth consistency so the incense can be rolled evenly by hand.

Bamboo Charcoal

Made from bamboo, this fine charcoal supports a consistent burn. It helps regulate heat and keeps the smoke steady rather than heavy.

Sandalwood Powder (Santalum album)

Traditionally sourced from India and Southeast Asia, sandalwood forms the backbone of our base. It has a warm, creamy wood scent and gives structure and depth to the blend.

Vanilla Powder (Vanilla spp.)

Grown in tropical regions such as Madagascar and Mexico, vanilla adds a soft warmth. It rounds the sharper edges of wood and resin without becoming overly sweet.

Makko Powder (Machilus thunbergii)

A natural binder made from tree bark, traditionally used in Japanese incense making. It helps the stick hold its shape and burn evenly from top to base.

Plant Resins & Gums

We work with a range of natural resins depending on the blend. These may include elemi, copal, labdanum, mastic, dammar, myrrh, frankincense, opoponax, gum arabic, or tragacanth. Resins add body and complexity. Some are bright and citrus-like. Others are warm, balsamic, or earthy. Together, they deepen the scent and help it develop gradually as the stick burns.

How the Base Works

The combination of wood powders, charcoal, natural binders, and resins creates a stable foundation. It allows the stick to burn slowly and evenly while supporting the oil applied during finishing. The result is a clean, steady ribbon of smoke and a scent that unfolds in stages rather than all at once.

A Note on Oils

After rolling and drying, each stick is finished with fragrance or essential oils specific to the blend. These oils shape the final scent profile. Not every incense contains every resin listed above. Blends are adjusted depending on the character of the fragrance. The base remains consistent in structure, designed to prioritise balance, burn quality, and natural materials.
